What is semaglutide?

Semaglutide is an FDA-approved medication for adults 18 years and older who are obese, or who are overweight and have had other weight-related conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes.

It is available as a once-weekly injection or a daily oral tablet.

How does semaglutide work?

Semaglutide works in certain areas of your brain that impact your desire or food cravings.  This medication causes a decrease in your appetite by sending a signal of “fullness” to your brain, which means you eat less and lose weight.  It also helps decrease blood sugar levels which energizes you throughout the day.  Stabilized and controlled blood sugars help improve other areas of your overall health which contributes to an overall general sense of well-being.  Semaglutide works best when combined with healthy lifestyle changes.

Who CANNOT use semaglutide?

• Pregnant women
• People with a personal history of or a family history of thyroid cancer or a condition called Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Syndrome Type 2
• People with a prior allergic reaction to semaglutide
• People already taking other semaglutide-containing products or any other product from the group of medicines in the GLP-1 receptor agonist class such as:
• Dulaglutide (TrulicityⓇ) 
• Exenatide extended release (Bydureon BCiseⓇ) 
• Exenatide (ByettaⓇ) 
• Semaglutide (OzempicⓇ, RybelsusⓇ, WegovyⓇ)
• Liraglutide (VictozaⓇ, SaxendaⓇ) 
• Lixisenatide (AdlyxinⓇ)
• Tirzepatide (MounjaroⓇ, ZepboundⓇ)

How much weight can I lose by taking semaglutide?

In studies, obese and overweight people without diabetes using semaglutide along with lifestyle modifications lost an average of 14-16% of their initial body weight after 68 weeks of treatment.  

What are the most common side effects of semaglutide?
